Course programme

Available as a full certificate or as individual units, this qualification can be undertaken as a standalone award or alongside the Care Level 2 NVQ. It can also be used to certificate continuing development or as a stepping stone to professional training such as social work or nursing.

The certificate offers comprehensive coverage of the knowledge, skills and core values needed by workers to deliver effective and safe person centred services. It also provides a specialist and applied knowledge base which will enable learners to approach their work and further development with more confidence.

There are a large variety of units to select from which are all based specifically around the learning disability specialism. This provides a range of pathways for workers across the full spectrum of services.

There are five core units that each learner must complete: understanding risk; encouraging positive communication; understanding learning disabilities; contributing to protection from abuse; understanding anti-oppressive practice.

Then there are a number of optional units that learners can choose from: contributing to assessment and care planning; promoting user participation in community life; supporting skills for everyday living; contributing to service users' learning; understanding advocacy; understanding sexual expression.
