This programme is ideal for school leavers who want to become skilled craftspeople.
This course develops your knowledge and skills in college rather than in a working environment.
You will learn by a series of practical exercises in well-equipped workshops, backed-up by relevant classroom theory. This includes learning all aspects of basic woodwork including the use of hand and power tools and the preparation and assembly of joinery products.
You will also undertake qualifications in personal and social development and functional skills.

Course programme

You will cover the following units: Carry out safe working practices in construction Information, quantities and communicating with others Knowledge of building methods and construction technology Knowledge of basic woodworking joints -Produce basic woodworking joints Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools Construct an external inspection hatch. Providing an introductory insight in to the construction industry. Students will develop and demonstrate a working understanding of basic construction practices in joinery. This course is delivered at Keighley College. There are no formal entry requirements but applicants will have to demonstrate a commitment to learning. You must also be able to work safely in a construction environment. You can progress to the level 2 diploma in carpentry & joinery offered at Leeds City College (Keighley Campus).
