Course programme

The initial parts of the course will focus on understanding the characteristics of wood and stone as materials, and you will be introduced to the work of many sculptors, both contemporary and historical. Time will then be spent making several maquettes (small models) in an easily-carvable material, or modelled in clay or plasticine, before embarking on a piece in stone or wood. Along with techniques of chiselling, you will also be made aware of possibilities for splitting and bolting stone and incorporating other materials or objects. These techniques will be taught and explored as your carving progresses. We will also cover safe working practice and tool maintenance.
