"The cashier deals with the management of all cash transactions, from customer payments to the opening and closing procedures of the terminal inside a store. A cash register or even just an automatic cash machine is a mechanical or electronic device for calculating and memorizing sales transactions, normally combined with a drawer to store the money ordered in the various denominations. Generally, the cash register prints a receipt for the buyer which contains the details of the transaction, the payment, the date of the purchase and the identification of the cashier that performed the operation. A recorder, if set up, can also print the invoice or the receipt. Often the cash register has the cash drawer connected in such a way as to allow its opening only at the end of the transaction or with a special key that only the manager has. This reduces the risk of petty theft by staff, for example by failing to register a sale and pocketing the consideration. The first cash registers were entirely mechanical and without receipts. The cashier entered the transaction data on the recorder and when he pressed the key corresponding to the total, a bell rang and the drawer opened, letting the manager know that a sale had taken place.
