An introduction to playing the cello in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing and individual practice (please bring your own instrument). Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study.
To make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class (ideally at least 20 minutes on least 5 days per week).

Course programme

- An introduction to the instrument including tips on general maintenance, insurance and travelling with your cello
- How to read bass clef
- How to hold and use the bow
- Correct left hand position and fingering in 1st position
- Playing in the most natural and relaxed way to take care of your posture
- Start developing good listening skills.

Please bring your own cello, bow, rosin and case, as well as a pencil and notebook. If you do not yet own a cello, you might consider hiring one. Many music shops offer a good hire or hire-purchase scheme; the tutor can advise you. You will need to purchase Kathy & David Blackwell, "Cello Time Joggers" Book 1 (around £9), which you will use throughout Level 1. You can find this here The tutor will recommend further music as the course progresses.
