If you have been playing cello for around a year, progress your playing to the next level in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. This course develops your playing technique, reading music notation, and basic music theory and continues with module 3.

About this course

- Play foundation level cello music with a good relaxed posture and correct technique in each hand- Sight-read simple bass clef music- Play in ensembles as well as on your own- Play on your own with confidence.

You will need to bring your own cello, bow, rosin and case. The tutor will recommend music for you to purchase during the course. Please bring manuscript paper, pen and a pencil.

Course programme

- Further exploration of playing in the most natural and relaxed way of taking care of your posture.
- Learning to tune your instrument.
- Basic scales and arpeggios in both major and minor keys over 2 octaves.
- Extensions both forwards and back.
- Basic bowing styles including changing bow direction in quicker passages.
- Develop your listening and intonation.


Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing and individual practice (please bring your own instrument). Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study.
To make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class (ideally at least 20 minutes on least 5 days per week).
