For four days you will work from a live model to study the art of clay figure sculpture. This is something I have a keen interest in- I recently won an award from the Society of Portrait Sculptors for my work entitled ‘Rag and Bone’. You will make a series of small figure sculptures and a larger, half life size, clay sculpture from life. You will then prepare this sculpture to be fired into a ceramic piece which will be suitable for display outdoors.
As you get to grips with the process you’ll discover that there’s a variety of ways to make sculpture. You’ll also discover one of the fascinating aspects of figurative art- this is not merely a likeness, there’s some of yourself in there too. Whether it’s how you handle the clay or where you choose to elaborate and edit, it’s quite astonishing.
This masterclass includes a lunches, refreshments and all tools and materials.

Course programme
We’ll start by making small clay sketches of the model. This 3D drawing makes you focus intently on the subject and you will notice far more than you would otherwise. You'll be working quickly and moving the model around to get lots of different angles.
The process becomes more refined and analytical as we start to make measured armatures for our clay sculptures (half life size).
Follwing this we start to build onto the armature with a good quality hand building clay. Measurement tools become useful and there are a variety of modelling techniques to be applied. As we continue this study over the weekend I’ll introduce you to the work of many other sculptors and talk you through the different approach taken in my own clay work.
The last day of the course involves hollowing and preparing your clay sculpture for firing. When your work has been fired into a ceramic sculpture it wiil be suitable for outdoor display. Alternatively you could have a mould and cast made.* If you’re particularly pleased with your results I can put you in touch with an excellent foundry who’ll cast it in bronze!
*not included in fee.
