Course description
This course enables you to develop your subject knowledge so that you can then move on to a programme of Initial Teacher Education, such as PGCE or School Direct.
The course increases your enthusiasm, confidence and proficiency in your own mathematics and helps you to develop the awareness and skills needed to teach across the secondary age range. Successfully completing it leads to a certificate in higher education.
The Mathematics Education Centre at Sheffield Hallam has a long established national reputation for providing subject knowledge enhancement for those pursuing secondary mathematics teaching as a career.
There are modules which allow you to extend existing mathematical knowledge, broadening your range of approaches to the subject with an emphasis on problem posing and problem solving. Mathematical creativity is encouraged and the use of new technologies is fully integrated into the course. Areas of content include a wide range of pure mathematics, mathematical modelling and historical perspectives on mathematics.
Throughout the course there is an emphasis on group work. We aim to be both supportive and challenging and we adopt methods of teaching that promote active learning. Most sessions are based on a workshop style and incorporate practical work, discussion and an investigative approach to study.
You complete mostly subject-based study at degree level, with some work alongside pupils in schools. Teaching groups are small, between 15 and 35 students, and are conducted in a lively and supportive atmosphere.
