Level: This is a Level 2 course.

What is the Certificate in Counselling Skills course?
This course will provide you with a sound level of competence in the use of counselling skills and will help you heighten and extend your personal awareness and development whether in work or in a personal capacity.

The course is particularly suited to those who may be working either waged or voluntarily in areas such as Citizen Advice Bureau, Youth Societies, Line managers or Supervisors etc and those in, or considering, any support/helping roles.

It would be useful if you have already gained the Introduction to Counselling Skills Level One (Certificate in Interpersonal Skills) qualification or have interpersonal skills experience and you should have experience of PC use, Word Processing and Internet searching, or be attending a Computer Skills course. This qualification is a good grounding for those wishing to consolidate their skills and knowledge and who may be considering a career in counselling.

NB An interview is required before you can enrol on this course.

Course topics
Will enable clients to gain:
  • Insight into issues and concerns
  • Bring work to a satisfactory closure
  • Evaluate own practice
  • Use counselling skills in a vocational context
Teaching and Learning
The course is participative and experiential. You will take part in group discussions, small group work and role-play. The sessions are not in formal lecture style.

You will be expected to complete some written work outside the classroom and you should allocate between two and three hours a week for this.

Assessment details
Assessments will be by observation of your practical skills and recording your experiences in writing, creating a portfolio of evidence including a candidate journal and records of skills practice. There will also be a short written test which will be externally marked by the NCFE.
