Level: This is a Level 1 course.

What is the Introduction to Basic Counselling Skills Level 1 (Certificate in Interpersonal Skills) course?
This course will help you to learn more about listening, helping and counselling skills. You do not require any prior knowledge or experience to attend this course.

Course topics

• The qualities necessary for a helping interview
• The ethical use of interpersonal skills
• The purpose of referral
• Beginning to apply the concept of self awareness
• The basic challenging skills
• Identifying and using skills in an applied context

Teaching and Learning
The course is participative and experiential. You will take part in group discussions, small group work and role-play. The sessions are not in formal lecture style.

You will be expected to complete some written work outside the classroom and you should allocate between two and three hours a week for this.

Assessment details
Assessments will be by observation of your practical skills and recording your experiences in writing by means of a candidate diary and writing a short external assessment.
