On this course you can expect to develop the skills and knowledge required for a range of careers supporting the care and education of young children.
You will also undertake training placements in childcare and education settings.
- English language OR maths at grade C and three other grade Ds at GCSE (must include English language or maths), or a Level 1 Diploma in Caring for Children, or a Level 1 Health and Social Care qualification
- You will be required to undertake a DBS check that the college will fund prior to any placement. Any reprimands, cautions, warnings, convictions or ASBOs may affect your chances of securing a work placement
You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You will also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

How long is the course?One year.

You'll be assessed through observation within the workplace, written assignments and set tasks.
What does the course lead to?Upon successful completion you could decide to pursue a career in a childcare setting as an early years worker or progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce (available at the college).
What will I study?The course content will cover the knowledge and skills required to support children's care and development, children's welfare, paediatric first aid, enabling learning environments and positive relationships.
You will also study a Functional Skill at a level appropriate to you.
It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
