The CertHE Health and Social Care is a one year programme explores a range of disciplines within the health and social care area and encourages students to develop skills in reflective practice, critical enquiry and independent study.


The course gives a solid introduction to the variety of options available within health and social care. This programme provides a higher education opportunity at level 4 for individuals considering progression within the health and social care arena or established in a career in the vocational area of health and social care. It offers students progression opportunity to level 5 and includes modules on reflective practice, human growth and development, and research enquiry methods. Modules enable learners to extend their knowledge and skills within their chosen specialism. Students will obtain a critical appreciation of the benefits of supervised practice as part of their ongoing development and participate in discussion on a range of issues and debates confronting contemporary health and social care practice.


Delivery is through a range of methods including, lectures, seminars, case-study, discussions, and workshops. A variety of assessment strategies will be used including assignments, case studies, essays, patchwork texts, presentations (group).

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment strategies will be used including assignments, case studies, patchwork texts, essays and exam.






60 UCAS points plus GCSE maths and English (grades A*-C). All applicants will be interviewed and will also need to undertake a written piece as part of the interview. Satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced check. Please note there is a charge of £44 for a DBS check.




Opportunities for graduates of the Certificate of Higher Education exist in health and social care settings and in a wide variety of NHS positions. Our graduates, who were already in employment, have been able to access more senior positions and supervisory responsibilities. Others progress onto level 5 BA (Hons.) in Health and Social Care.

This will enable students in the health and social care sector to provide evidence of continuing professional development and preparation for work progression.

Applying for a Full-Time Degree-Level course



Apply through UCAS



If you would like to apply for any of Colchester Institute's Degree Level courses, your method of application will differ depending on whether
you want to apply for a full-time or part-time version of your chosen course. If you are applying full-time, you will need to apply through the
Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), which is a UK-based charity whose main role is providing the application process for almost
all British universities.



The service cost £23 for a multi application and £12 for a single application in 2015, however it is possible this may increase for 2016 applicants.
Each course has a unique "course code" that you will need to make note of and use during your applciation. You can find out more information and

Applying for a Part-Time Degree-Level course


All part-time degree-level courses are not offered through UCAS, and must be applied for directly through Colchester Institute.

Applying as a Full-Time International Student (EU & Overseas)


Applications for Higher Education courses from International Students must also be made via the Universities
and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Applications can be made on-line from any country via the UCAS website
at www.ucas.com. Details of all eligible courses
are given at this site, Colchester Institute's UCAS reference number is CINST C75.



International Applications made via UCAS will be forwarded to us for processing but the offer and acceptance
procedure is made through UCAS and not directly with us.

Applying as an Part-Time International Student (EU only)


Students coming into the UK on a Tier 4 (General) student visa will only be eligible to apply
for full-time courses at a minimum NQF level 3
or above or full-time English Language Programmes.
