If you are looking for employment in the security industry it is essential that you have the appropriate qualifications to apply for the SIA licence in order to practice. This course is designed for both men and women who wish to work as a security guard either in a retailed outlet, pub, bar, nightclub, hotel, restaurant, off licence and supermarkets, where the work involves the provision of services to the public, to avoid and manage conflict within their work environment.

There are two units for this qualification:
1. The Roles and Responsibilities of Security Guards
2. Conflict Management for Security Guards.

Syllabus Outline
Unit 1
The aim is to develop the learner’s knowledge so that they can assess their work environment and reduce the risk to people, property and premises, by providing effective security and deal with incidents in accordance with agreed procedures.

There are twelve outcomes to this unit. The learner can:

  1. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the Security Guard
  2. Identify the requirements for effective patrolling
  3. Identify the requirements for controlling access
  4. Identify the requirements for search procedures
  5. Identify security and emergency systems and procedures
  6. Recognise requirements for dealing with fire
  7. Identify requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act
  8. Identify the role and powers of the Security Guard in law
  9. Identify requirements for dealing with emergencies
  10. Identify requirements for customer care
  11. Identify requirements for effective communication
  12. Recognise equality and diversity in the workplace.

Unit 2
The aim is to provide the basic understanding to deal effectively with Workplace violence.

There are three outcomes to this unit. The learner can:

  1. Assess and reduce the risk of violence in the work environment
  2. Identify behaviour that indicates an escalation towards violence and take appropriate measures to avoid or calm and defuse the situation
  3. Identify post incident support and report the circumstances to provide information for personal and organisation learning.

Connections with other awards:

The Level 2 Certificate for Security Guards is designed as part of a progression award to prepare those learners working towards achieving the following NVQs and the underpinning knowledge contained within the specific units.
