This course enables registered adult nurses to develop knowledge and skills in cervical screening. It will assist you to gain the knowledge and skills required to competently take cervical samples and enhance your knowledge of the pathophysiology involved in cervical cytology.

About this course
This course is based upon the guidance of the National Health Cervical Screening Programme.
In order to support you in developing your skills, experienced external mentors will be provided.
You will be taught by clinicians who are qualified cervical screeners.
You will utilise an online portfolio in order to ensure that your training is documented and meets national quality assurance.
You will consider the factors affecting the uptake of the screening programme.
This course may assist you in expanding your career path through gaining the knowledge and ability to competently take cervical samples. It may also assist you in meeting the specialist skills and post-registration development requirements stipulated by your employer/professional regulator.
You must:
Be a qualified nurse currently registered to practice in the UK
Have access to an in-house support health professional who meets the criteria set out by the Quality Assurance Reference Centre
Be able to take samples under the supervision of the in-house support in an environment that meets the criteria set out by the Quality Assurance Reference Centre
Have access to women who are undergoing cervical screening
If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall

Course programme
You will be taught through a series of lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, field work and external visits. Your studies will be supported by the University's virtual learning environment.
Assessment will include a written assignment, submission of work books and completion of a practice assessment document. Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course.
Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.
