About this course

Students must be aged 19 or over. Candidates must have evidence of working at Level 1 Literacy, without this screening will be required. Students will need to comply with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) vetting procedures for those working with children and young people (as required by Law). Students must also compelte a four week preparation for NVQ course.

Introduction:
The Certificate in Children`s Care Learning & Development is an ideal starting point for those wishing to gain a qualification in childcare.

College sessions provide a practical opportunity for you to develop your knowledge of caring for children aged 0 to 16 years. You will study development and ways to nurture children to reach their full potential. The programme will help you develop an understanding of working in a variety of childcare settings, meeting required standards and following procedures.

Study Mode & Location:
This course is held at the Fulwood Campus and also at community venues. Courses at the Fulwood Campus are 20 week courses with 3 hours per week. At community venues the course is for 24 weeks with 2.5 hours per week. In addition to this, students will need to carry out 60 hours of palcement in a related workpalce.

Course Content:
The course is made up of 4 units, which include:

  • Principles and values relating to the care of children age 0-16 years.
  • Supporting the childcare environments.
  • Supporting children and young people`s development.
  • Assisting with children`s play and learning.


You are required to seek and attend a placement (either paid or voluntary) in a childcare setting to put your knowledge to practical use. Tutorial support is also available. During the programme, assignments will be given relating to the subject being covered, which will build in to a portfolio, showing your knowledge. The course also requires a small amount of private study each week.

Assessment:
Each unit has an assignment, which will be marked by your tutor.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
At the end of this course, if you have gained sufficient experience, there will be an opportunity to discuss an assessment package that will lead to a full NVQ Level 2 award.

Costs:
This course is subsidised by the Lancashire Education Authority (LEA). Tuition fees will therefore be substantially reduced (to £50) for Lancashire residents/employees (subject to final confirmation).

How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
