About this course

At least 3 GCSEs at grade D or above plus a caring, enthusiastic and sympathetic manner with an aptitude for practical work and dedication to the care of children. A Foundation Award in caring for children in Early Years (merit grade) may also be considered.

Aim This course will enable you to gain a broad understanding of child care issues and help you develop skills that are highly valued by employers.
Content The course is made up of 6 units:
Unit 1 - Understanding childrens development
Unit 2 - Keeping children safe
Unit 3 - Communication with children and adults
Unit 4 - Preparing and maintaining environments for childcare
Unit 5 - Professional development, roles and responsibilities in childcare.
And one optional unit.

Work placements will enable you to develop your professional skills. You will spend 2 days of your college week on practical work-training placements.

Your knowledge and understanding of the modules will be assessed by unit assignments (set by the examination board). You will have to record evidence of competent practice and demonstrate satisfactory personal and professional development.

In addition you will need to complete a multiple choice paper.

Progression/career opportunities
Successful students who gain the right grades may choose to use their qualification as a progression route to higher-level courses in the Early Years field. Alternatively, those seeking employment can find a wide range of supervised careers in Early Years settings.

Extra information All students will be required to successfully complete a CRB disclosure form in order to attend work placements. The cost of which should be met by the student and is currently £37.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
