This internationally recognised qualification provides underpinning knowledge, theory and practical training for those wishing to work with children.
The length of the course is one year with a mixture of college and placement days over the year.
Is the Course for Me?
You will need to demonstrate a sensible and mature attitude to both work and study and a desire to work with children. The course is suitable for learners who have completed Year 11 at school.
What will I Learn?
The course is modular as follows:
Unit 1 Introduction to Working with Children
Unit 2 The Developing Child
Unit 3 Safe, Healthy and Nurturing Environments for Children
Unit 4 Children and Play
Unit 5 Communication and Professional Skills within Child Care and Education
Unit 6 The Child Care Practitioner in the Workplace (graded practice unit)
Plus one optional unit (Unit 10)
How will I Learn?
This course is delivered through taught lessons, group work, assignments and practical work e.g. planning and making activities to use with children. You will also be able to link theory to practice through the work placement.
How will I be Assessed?
Learners will need to achieve a pass or above in nationally set assessments at the end of each unit. The range of assessment methods includes a multi-choice question paper, portfolio of work and assignments.
The practical element is assessed and graded through a personal evidence diary, professional development profiles and practice evidence records.
Learners will be expected to achieve the Award/Certificate and Diploma within the year.
To achieve the Level 2 Award you must successfully complete units 1 and 2.
To achieve the Level 2 Certificate you must successfully complete units 1 to 5.
To achieve the full Level 2 'Diploma' you must successfully complete Units 1 to 5, the graded practice unit (Unit 6) and one optional unit
What Enrichments are Available?
You will have an opportunity to develop Key Skills in Working with Others to enable you to progress on to a higher level course or move into employment . A range of enrichment opportunities will be offered alongside this course including Craft and Functional Skills. Learners will also have access to various other activities within the College including sporting events and organised trips to develop and broaden their experience of College life.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
Yes - trips and visits will be organised where they will enhance the topics being studied.
Is there any Work Experience?
Throughout the qualification you will be expected to participate in professional practice in a variety of settings in order to apply what you learn in a practical environment. This equates to 50% of the course and will include placements such as day nurseries, LEA nurseries and primary schools.
What can I Progress to?
On successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma at C Grade, a Functional Skills qualification and a satisfactory report learners' may progress onto the next level of the course. Learners may also enter into employment as a nanny/mothers help, teacher's aide, playgroup worker or nursery assistant.

Many ex-college learners have gone onto successfully gain employment within a childcare setting with many more progressing to higher level courses.
