This is the second ten week block of a 30 week course aimed at preparing students for HSK basic level Chinese proficiency test. The course will be based on five mock exam papers and there will be further practice on vocabulary and grammar. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills will all be covered. Students who wish to register for the exam will be expected to take it at SOAS, London in May 2010.
HSK is a standardised test at the state level to assess the Chinese proficiency of non-native speakers. It is supervised by a Chinese National Committee established by the Chinese Ministry of Education. HSK is held regularly in China and other countries each year. The UK test centre is at SOAS, London. Students can apply for the test individually and the test is held twice a year. HSK certificates will be issued if they pass the test successfully.
The course book is HSK Basic Mandarin, ISBN no 978-7-80052-777-7. Other materials developed by the tutor will also be used.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the 10 week course students will have had the opportunity to
· Read about and discuss many topics including aspects of Society and the Economy, popular science, festivals and culture.
· Practise items of Chinese grammar, including prepositions, three different tenses, compliments, words of measurement and duration, modal verbs, extended use of location words, conjunctives, clauses, the passive voice, 'ba' sentences and the comparative.
· Work towards the HSK Chinese Proficiency test to be taken in May 2010.
Your Tutor
Wenyum Liu is a native Mandarin speaker from Shanghai, China. She has a BA in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and a MPhil Research in Second Language Education. She is now teaching Chinese to non-native speakers at different levels at several establishments in Cambridge including the Language Centre at Cambridge University

Method of payment: Fees for short courses (10 weeks or less) to be paid in full at enrolment and for long courses (12 weeks or more) fees of 50% can be paid at enrolment plus 50% as a cheque. Course places cannot be reserved without receipt of both payments.
