Course programme

What you can expect from the course

When they book a place on one of our full SMSTS training courses, candidates can be expected to be taught everything they need to know about enforcing the health and safety code of practice on any construction site. They will learn why it’s important to carry out regular risk assessments in the workplace, and they will discover ways to identify, monitor and control the hazards that are often associated with the building and civil engineering sectors.

Every SMSTS course will cover the following:
  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995
  • Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007
  • Working at Height Regulations 2005
  • Provision & Use of Work Equipment 1998
  • Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
  • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006
  • Scaffolding
  • Confined Spaces
  • Electricity
  • Excavations
  • Syndicate Exercises
  • 4 Core Exercises (including Risk Assessment, Site Briefings and Site Setup)
  • 25 Question Multiple Choice Examination
The assessment process

Our CITB SMSTS training courses, which take place in various venues throughout Essex, run for a full 5 days. Candidates will need to complete case studies and exercises to the satisfaction of the course leader, and they will also need to sit an exam at the end of the programme to prove their competency.

The only way to guarantee that Site Managers are equipped for their role is to ensure they attend every single workshop and training session that takes place as part of the SMSTS course. 100% attendance will be required from each candidate in order to successfully complete the certificate.

Qualifications are officially valid for 5 years after the date of completion of the training course. However, we would always recommend that candidates book themselves onto an SMSTS refresher course no longer than 3 years after their initial training. Legislation within the construction industry, along with the culture that underpins it, is changing from quarter to quarter, so attending regular refresher programmes is the only way to ensure that candidates are kept up to date with the latest rules and regulations.
