Brief Description of the Course:

This course provides a basic introduction to the horticulture industry, including arboriculture.

Students support the maintenance of the Victorian Walled Garden, the woodland and the parkland areas within Croxteth Country Park. Areas of study will include border maintenance, amenity turf, propagation, planting and pruning techniques as well as additional modules covering work safety and skills development in the land-based industries. Time will be spent in the classroom and outdoors developing practical skills. Students must have an interest in the subject and have some prior experience of working with in horticulture. A portfolio of written work must be completed as well as a short on-line assessment.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students need to be interested in the subject area, with some practical knowledge of small animal care desirable.

Academic qualifications are not essential, but a basic level of maths and English is important.

Employment in grounds maintenance, local authorities, private gardens, garden centres etc.

Progression:

Students who successfully complete the course could possibly progress onto Level 2 Diploma in horticulture or arboriculture or into employment / apprenticeship.

Special Requirements Equipment and/or Clothing: Wellington boots or other sturdy work boots.
