Brief Description of the Course:

(NB. All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification)

This Level 2 introductory course will provide a comprehensive introduction to agriculture and the Land-Based Industries. It is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine a practical based training programme with sound theoretical knowledge. You will gain a broad understanding of agriculture, with a view to progressing to one of our Level 3 Diploma courses, or to start work in the agricultural/land-based industry.

Entry Criteria:

Students are normally aged 16 or over with a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language or equivalent qualifications.

¨ Introduction to Farm Animal Production

¨ Participate in Providing Estate Maintenance

¨ Introduction to Landbased Machinery Operations

¨ Tractor Driving

¨ Introduction to Animal and Plant Biology

¨ Environmental and Land-based Business

¨ Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries

Assessments:

Study will be a mixture of classroom based theory and practical sessions and some work out on the farms and the College estate. You will have the chance to also study a module on tractor driving. Work experience, often carried out on the College farm, is a mandatory part of this study programme.

You will also have the opportunity to study additional qualifications aimed at developing your personal and professional skills.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Assistant stockperson, assistant tractor-driver, general farm worker, estate worker

Progression:

There is opportunity for progression onto the Level 3 Diploma courses including Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships if you gain the required grade at Level 2, complete your Functional Skills and have a good Tutor reference.

Additional Qualifications:

· ASDAN Level 2 Award in Personal Effectiveness

· ASCENTIS Level 1 Award in Managing Personal Finance

Industrial / Work Experience:

Work experience is a mandatory element of this study programme and as such you will be expected to work in an agriculture environment.

Special Requirements:

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment:

¨ Steel toe-capped boots/wellington boots

¨ Protective overalls

¨ Waterproof coat and leggings.
