This course will provide the opportunity to explore all the stages of professional design practice, from initial design brief through to the processes involved in reaching creative visual solutions. There will be an emphasis on researching, generating and visualising ideas and transforming these ideas into real graphic design projects.
On the course you will be encouraged to develop a creative approach to design briefs using a range of experimental techniques to explore image and text design including collage, drawing and tracing. You will learn how to use the latest professional Adobe CC design applications Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to make your ideas a reality.
The course takes you on an exploration of graphic design through a series of typographic, colour theory, layout and information design exercises applied to a wide range of industry related projects. Invaluable for gaining the necessary graphic design skills, expertise and portfolio for a starting you on your career in Design or gaining a place in higher level courses.
Although this is a non-accredited course, students successfully completing the course will be awarded our City Lit Certificate - based on achievements of the course outcomes and attendance.

About this course
- Demonstrate an ability to realise graphic solutions using a range of methods and materials.
- Understand the processes involved in professional graphic design.
- Use Photoshop to manipulate and transform images
- Use Illustrator to generate and transform images and text
- Use InDesign to create effective page layouts and designs
- Present a bank of visual ideas in both sketchbook and portfolio (digital and traditional) forms.
- Critically evaluate design work.

You will need an A4 size sketchbook for drawing/recording information, and an A4 size plastic folder with clear pockets to assemble a portfolio of work. Black ink drawing pens, 0.2 and 0.5, and a pack of coloured marker pens.

You should have a memory stick (or mac formatted portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to). You will be using some computer software on this course. We have Adobe Creative Cloud (which includes Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) on some machines in the Student Centre at City Lit f...
You will be taught with workshops, short lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and hand outs. City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Graphics & Illustration and Photography.
