240 UCAS points from at least two A2-levels (or equivalent) including mathematics or a numerate science to at least AS-level (or equivalent), or successful completion of the Engineering Foundation Year.

You should also have five GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) in any subjects.

About the course

Our dedicated staff team will provide you with a high level of support throughout your studies. All the teaching staff are construction industry professionals with extensive experience and knowledge of the industry and they are all active on the industry’s professional bodies.

You will learn through a mix of learning methods including field, laboratory and project work, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Assessment methods include coursework, project work, presentations and examinations.

A large proportion of your studies will mirror conditions in the industry. This includes an interdisciplinary group project in your final year which simulates the process of a construction project from inception to completion and in which you will carry out the role of a civil engineer working within a team of other construction specialists.

As the department has close contacts with the industry you may have the opportunity to take part in site visits. Professionals from the construction industry, including former students, regularly give talks and lectures on the course.

What you will learn


You will acquire a thorough understanding of the practical skills in civil engineering including construction techniques, the properties of construction materials, structural, geotechnical, hydraulic and highway and transport engineering.

You will build your knowledge of the theoretical principles that underpin the role including applied mathematics and research methods and learn the relevant associated skills in communications, IT and management.

This course is designed to enable you to achieve the intellectual and personal skills necessary to pursue a career as a civil, structural, geotechnical, hydraulic or highway and transportation engineer in this country or overseas.

Recent graduates have been employed by civil and structural engineering practices, local authorities and civil engineering contractors.

Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators of the Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers for Incorporated Engineer status.

You will be encouraged to become a student member of the relevant Institution(s) and take part in local and regional activities, enabling you to network with potential employers.
