Suitable for: People pursuing a higher degree soon or immediately after obtaining their first degree, and those with considerable work experience.
About this course
Applicants should normally have a good UK honours degree, or equivalent professional or overseas qualifications, in a relevant academic discipline. For applicants with a non-technical degree, then the normal minimum entry requirement will be a second class honours degree, and their suitability will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
If your first language is not English, then you need to demonstrate that you have a good command of the English language.

Course programme
The MSc in Civil Engineering is part of our extensive programme of postgraduate studies and research. The course builds on our renowned research expertise and industrial experience in current aspects of Civil Engineering.
Programme Content
The programme lasts a full year and contains three main elements:
Core Modules (17%) - these provide skills generic to engineering and research:
- Research Methodology
- Health & Safety and Environmental Management
- Communication Skills
Specialist Modules (33%) - these provide in-depth and advanced knowledge, and build upon our recognised expertise in Civil Engineering. Students take any three specialist modules that are available that year, subject to approval of the programme director and timetabling constraints. Examples of current modules include:
- Advanced Structural Analysis
- Innovative Structures
- Soil Dynamics & Earthquake Engineering
- Construction Systems
- Project and Enterprise Management
- Sustainable Use & Environmental Impact Assessment
Research Project (50%) - This gives you the opportunity to benefit from, and contribute to our research. At the end of the project students submit a dissertation based on their research.
Methods of Assessment
The course is assessed by coursework and examination.
