This course develops your playing technique on the clarinet, working on articulation, breathing, dynamics and expression markings, fingering for the main notes, and how to read and play pitch and rhythm. We will also work on improvisation and ensemble playing. Tutor: Ross Thomas.

About this course

- Improve your tone on your clarinet- Improve your control of breathing and articulation- Play a wider range of notes on the clarinet- Read and play basic music notation- Play simple tunes and ensemble music- Improvise on simple melodies.

Please bring your own Bb clarinet, reeds, and a pencil.Required text: Jonathan Rutland, Abracadabra Clarinet 3rd ed. [c.£10 incl CD]. This book is used throughout level 1 and level 2 courses. Your tutor recommends that you buy the version with the CD as this will be of most use to you.The course also draws on repertoire from Easy Clarinet Duets and Progressive Jazz Studies for Clarinet: Easy Level by James Rae.The tutor will provide other musical material. Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group and individual playing. Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study.
To make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class (ideally at least 20 minutes on least 4 days per week).

This course leads to Clarinet level 2, offered every academic year.
