Classical Greek 1: module 1

- demonstrate some knowledge of the Greek alphabet
- demonstrate some knowledge of definite article
- demonstrate some knowledge of the declension of adjectives
- demonstrate some knowledge of present tense (indicative, imperative)
- demonstrate some knowledge of second declension nouns
- demonstrate knowledge of verbs ‘to be’ and ‘to know’
- demonstrate some knowledge of the structure of Greek
- have some insight into the derivation of English words.
- have some insight into the world of ancient Greece.
- being able to read simple sentences and texts written in Attic Classical Greek, such as sententiae and short paragraphs.

Reading Greek by the Joint Association of Classical Teachers (Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell); 2nd edition, CUP, 2 vols; vol. 1: Reading Greek, Text and Vocabulary; vol. 2: Reading Greek, Grammar and Exercises. Some copies are available in the Library for use during this course. Further materials to be provided by the teacher in class.

Whole class work and group work. Translation, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. Spoken Greek may be used during lessons, for the purposes of boosting learning, although students’ speaking skills will not be assessed. About 2 hours homework per week.
