About this course

- Chart the history of classical music in North America from the late c19th to the present day.- Be familiar with a range of different works and composers.- Understand and be able to distinguish the main temporal and aesthetic epochs in the period.

Please bring a notebook and pen.You may wish to buy some of the music or books recommended in class.

Course programme

- Dvorak and other ninetieth century composers in America
- Classical music in the Cold War
- Copland and American pastoral composers
- Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Jazz
- Cage, Oliveros, La Monte Young and other Experimentalists
- Reich, Glass, Eastman and Minimalism.


The classes will be a mixture of lecturing, listening and watching music and discussion. Wider reading and research will be suggested but there will not be any compulsory ‘homework’.

If you enjoy learning about music you may like to consider our wide range of instrumental classes including piano classes taught in our digital piano suite. All beginners classes are suitable for those who don’t yet read music notation but are keen to learn.
