Collections of objects from the Greek and Roman world are widespread in museums across the UK. This course explores how and why these collections were formed, by private individuals and public institutions. It also considers the ways they are presented to members of the public today, including through exhibitions, events and online.

- Have a good overview of the history of collecting of classical antiquities by UK museums.- Understand and discuss ethical issues of relevance to classical collecting.- Analyse museum exhibitions of classical antiquities, to identify the stories curators have chosen to highlight and think about alternative stories they might have told.

Illustrated lectures, group discussions, questions, reading. Additional museum visits and reading outside the class will enhance the experience, but are entirely optional.

Course programme
The course covers two main topics: the history of collecting of classical antiquities in the UK; and the ways museums present their Greek and Roman collections to the public. Particular areas of focus include:
- Private collectors of classical antiquities, including the Grand Tour
- Museums in the 19th and 20th centuries: how national, municipal and university museums collected and displayed classical objects
- The ethics of collecting, including the case of the ‘Elgin marbles’
- Different ways classical objects are presented in museums: e.g. as archaeology or as art
- Different ways visitors respond to classical objects in museums.
