Introduction

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a short-term, time-limited psychotherapy form which focuses on thinking processes (beliefs, attitudes and cognitions) and how thinking influences person’s behaviour. CBT aims to provide systematic and structured way of identifying unhelpful beliefs, provide tools to tackle and change the beliefs and help the individual to learn effective self-help skills and coping strategies through homework exercises and assignments.

Outline and the key areas of the workshop focus on:

1. Providing basic understanding of CBT theory and a grounding in the fundamental skills used in CBT. Assessment of the client’s thoughts; maladaptive thinking patterns, scemas and automatic thoughts, core beliefs, conceptualisation of the problems, and providing cognitive interventions.

2. Introducing basic CBT skills and techniques such as agenda and goal setting, identifying and testing negative assumptions, guided discovery, role play, use of behavioural exercises, home work assignments etc.

3. Exploration of similarities and boundaries between CBT and other forms of counselling and psychotherapy, evolution of CBT; mindfulness based approach, meaning of the relationship in CBT

4. Addressing and working with common psychological problems such as anxiety, panic, phobia, depression, obsessive thoughts

The workshop is partly taught with focus on experienced based interactive learning.
