Course Overview

In addition to its existing range of professional courses in health studies (see ‘hot' courses), South London College is planning to offer a range of courses in the specific area of ‘complementary medicine' from spring 2009. It is also exploring establishing a Centre for Complementary Therapies.

Scientific and medical opinion is increasingly open to the idea that the range of forms of therapy and treatment constituting a body of ‘complementary medicine', provides a valuable and effective addition and/or alternative to Western ‘scientific' medicine.

Given its international status - with teaching and administrative staff as well as students drawn from a wide variety of social backgrounds and coming from many different countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean - South London College is keen to offer the widest possible range of courses in the health studies area.

Diplomas (NQF Level 3)

Year 1 (Compulsory Three)

• Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology
• Diploma in Holistic Massage
• Diploma in Professional Conduct

Year 2 (You will be able to choose any one)

• Diploma in Aromatherapy
• Diploma in Reflexology
• Diploma in Indian Head Message

Year 3 (You will be able to choose any one again)

• Diploma in Aromatherapy
• Diploma in Reflexology
• Diploma in Indian Head Message

Other area you may continue after Year 3

• Diploma in Diet & Nutrition for Complementary Therapists
• Diploma in Infant & Child Massage
• Diploma in Lymphatic Drainage Massage
• Diploma in On Site Massage
• Diploma in Reiki
• Diploma in Stone Therapy Massage

ITEC:

• Registers and inspects colleges delivering ITEC programmes
• Requires rigorous standards for training
• Provides an independent examination system that tests your underpinning knowledge and skills giving you the confidence to work as a professional therapist

ITEC Graduates from the SLC may work:

• As salon/clinic owners or as visiting therapists
• In spas, clinics, salons and health farms
• In the Health Service
• At sports centres, clubs and leisure centres
• On cruise liners

3. Continuing professional training

Continuing professional training in specialist areas, dealing with eg strokes, heart conditions and diabetes will also be offered to existing professionals from 2009.
