These classes will introduce you to the fundamental theory and practices of three complementary therapies (massage, aromatherapy and reflexology). Gain an insight into how complementary therapies can alleviate stress and promote relaxation and healing through touch. The course is open to anyone with an interest in the subject, but is an excellent introduction for those wishing to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Complementary Therapies.
Please note that this is an open access course, both men and women may participate.

About this course

- Guide a person into a comfortable position in preparation for a massage treatment
- Identify a suitable massage oil to use on a person - considering skin types and reactions
- Name some indications and contraindications to massage
- Name and perform some basic massage movements (to include effleurage, petrissage and percussion)
- Briefly describe some values of touch in a safe and supportive environment
- Recognise the importance of hygiene before, during and after a massage treatment.
- Gain an insight into how aromatherapy benefits the individual in a holistic way
- Recognise and follow the safety guidelines when using essential oils and performing massage
- Give an aromatherapy massage to the arms and hands and face.
- Safely demonstrate the basic skills of foot massage and practically perform these skills on fellow students
- Improve receiver's ability to relax and relieve stress
- Gain awareness of common reflexes and their locations
- Recognise some contra-indications to reflexology
- Give a short treatment to yourself and friends.

You will need to bring with you to class the following items:
- Three large towels (one for underneath, two for the top)
- Antiseptic wet wipes (for hand and feet cleaning)
- Non-perfumed massage oil (e.g. almond or grapeseed) for massage purposes. Choose a suitable oil for your skin type and one that you are happy to have applied to your body. If you are allergic to nuts, choose an oil that is not nut-based.
- Pen and paper

Please also be aware that personal hygiene is an important aspect to consider when practising massage as you will be in close contact with other people.

You will be guided through the course by way of lecture, small group work and pair work. You will be able to work with a variety of fellow participants of varying ages, backgrounds, genders and abilities, where you will learn experientially. The emphasis will be on the practical application of massage, aromatherapy and reflexology using couches provided by the college. As the course is an Access to level 3, there will be a small amount of homework set to prepare you for the expectations of the Diploma.

Course programme

This course will cover the value of touch, the importance of hygiene in complementary therapy practice and general client care. You will also be introduced to the indications and contraindications of each therapy.

Massage - Gain basic knowledge of a variety of massage techniques including effleurage, petrissage and percussion on areas of the body such as the back, legs, arms, hands and feet.

Aromatherapy - History of aromatherapy; essential oils, guidelines of use, safety and contraindications; how essential oils interact with the body systems; selecting and storing essential oils and carrier oils; preparing a massage blend with essential oils.

Reflexology - The benefits and contra-indications of reflexology; historical background; relationship between feet and physical body; practical work in pairs: massage on feet.

This course may lead you on to attending the following courses: - Accredited courses such as the Level 3 Diploma in Complementary Therapies or Level 3 diploma in massage where you will then be able to practise the therapies professionally - Introduction to aromatherapy - Introduction to reflexology - Reiki - Anatomy and physiology - Other related health and body work courses.
