Computerised Book-Keeping (Sage) Level 1
This book-keeping qualification uses Sage to gain IAB Level 1 certificate. This qualification is suitable for those who wish to gain an understanding of the fundamental principles concerned in the use of a computerised accounting system.

What does the course involve?
Your tutor will guide you through activities with explanations, demonstrations, lectures, discussion question and answer sessions and assign additional practice exercises to the classroom. A textbook will be used with additional handouts for class exercises as well as home study. Homework will be set each week and reviewed in a group exercise and individually marked in the following session.

What will I study?
Understand the business and computer environment Recognising health & safety regulations where they relate to working with the computer. Understanding the cause and effects of corruption of data, fire damage and the importance of anti-virus software and setting up firewalls. Data security and backing up and restoring data. Understand the need for complete confidentiality, at all times for customer, supplier and company information.

Setting up computer information How to initialise the accounting software including inputting company information, setting up the financial year and setting the defaults to suit the business needs. Set up and maintain accurate Sales, Purchase and Nominal Ledger accounts. Amending and deleting records as necessary.

Routine Transactions Entering details from sales and purchase invoices and credit notes including VAT transactions. Maintaining accurate and up to date records and make simple corrections to sales, purchase and nominal ledger accounts. The basics of double entry book-keeping.

Banking Transactions Processing customer receipts, supplier payments, recurring banking transactions such as direct debits and reconciling bank statements.

Petty Cash Deal with items of petty cash expenditure, taking into account any VAT paid. Identify and action the amount required to restore the balance of a petty cash float.

Reporting Producing day-to-day routine transaction reports such as customer and supplier daybooks, aged debtors and creditors analysis reports, credit control reports including statements and overdue letters. Producing nominal account activity reports, audit trail, bank reconciliation and trial balance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be able to understand the basic principles of book-keeping to do this course?
Ideally yes as this will help you to understand the fundamentals, however, it is not essential as these principles will be covered within the course.

What are the specific entry requirements for this course?
This course is not designed to show you how to use a computer and will assume that you already have good computer skills but does not assume any knowledge of Sage. Some previous experience of either manual or computerised bookkeeping is desirable but not essential.

How soon will I know if I have passed the examination?
IAB will notify you of your results approximately 10 weeks following the exam.

What happens if I fail an examination?
Exams are currently held twice a year for this qualification in January and June. You can pay to resit your examination at the next available sitting. This would need to be discussed with your tutor in the event of you not passing. If you do not turn up for an exam, you will automatically be recorded as a fail.

How do I enter for the examination?
The registration form will be given to you for completion within a few weeks of starting the course.

What percentage do I need to achieve to pass the exam?
The pass mark is 65% (Set by exam board and subject to change).

How long is the exam?
1.5 hours (Set by exam board and maybe subject to change). Priniting reports is allowed outside of the examination time.
