GCSEs in Mathematics and English at grade C or above; 120 UCAS tariff points; a Level 3 ICT or computing qualification; ACCESS to Higher Education certificate or equivalent. Mature students without formal qualifications are considered.

Is this course right for me?

This course is for school Sixth Form leavers, college students progressing from Level 3, ACCESS to Higher Education course, adults with significant computing experience. It reflects computing industry trends and equips you with wide ranging skills.

What will I be learning?

Year one: programming concepts with Pascal and Visual Basic; computer hardware systems; software tools and information systems; systems analysis and database design; control Systems and A I; multimedia design and authoring;programming in C; website design.
Year two: object orientated analysis and quality systems; network design and support; object orientated programming with C++; data structures and algorithms;server side programming;advanced computing project; human computer interface;decision support; programming in Java.

How will I learn?

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, tutorials, practical workshops and presentations. The programme is based on student-centred learning, through which students can develop a full approach to and take responsibility for their own learning. Throughout the course, students receive tuition and guidance from module leaders and personal tutors will provide regular individual tutorials and advise on progress and learning strategies. There will also be a variety of assessments throughout the course which will include:group and individual presentations; essays; case studies; reports and examinations.

What else might I want to know?

With a contemporary syllabus and up-to-date technology, this course has been designed to meet local employers' needs. The classes are small and there is a lot of individual support which has led many previous graduates to do exceptionally well when they have moved on to the final year of an honours degree at the University of Plymouth. The students build good supportive relationships with each other sharing a base room and social time.
You will need your own laptop or PC together with software, printer, storage, internet and running costs. Many students purchase their own books in key areas such as text books, software tutorials and software manuals. You will also need to buy stationery.

What can I do afterwards?

Most students progress to the final year of one of the following BSc honours degrees at the University of Plymouth: computing; multimedia computing; computing and software development; computing and web technologies; computing for commerce and business; computing for games development or computing and networks. By making particular choices of subjects you can tailor your own career aspiration in a variety of directions.
Following or instead of this, there is a wide choice or career opportunities throughout the public and private sectors both in the UK and abroad, where the qualification is internationally recognised. These include the fields of systems analysis, software engineering (programming), database development, network administration, web technology, computer installation and support.
