You will learn generic conducting skills to enable you to lead groups of instrumentalists and/or singers, whatever the style or genre of music. This course provides a solid introduction to conducting skills or will function as an ideal refresher to improve your technique if you already have some experience.

About this course

- Beat patterns for simple and compound metres
- Indicate changes of tempo and metre
- Bring in and cut off members of the ensemble
- Read scores and understand how ensemble textures work
- Rehearse a musical work effectively and efficiently
- Make your ensemble follow you, rather than vice versa.

Please bring your instrument if you play one (a piano is provided), as well as a notebook, pen and pencil.
Musical material will be provided by the tutor. You may wish to bring your own baton if you have one.

- Standard beat patterns
- Changes of tempo (gradual and sudden) and metre
- Entries and cut-offs
- Score-reading: dissecting the music and working out how to teach it to your group
- Convey the feel of the music through gesture
- How to manage differences in musical skills within a group.

- Practical exercises in movement and gesture in relation to music - Score analysis and listening exercises - Conducting other members of the class in ensemble music - Taking turns to play/sing in the ensemble - Observation and discussion - Sself and peer critique, feedback from tutor - You will be encouraged to reflect after each session, and prepare music for the following session.
