This course is for you if you want tangible academic rewards for some challenging study. The HNC in Construction is for you if you also wish to develop your higher level skills within the construction and built environment sector and progress to a higher technician and professional level in Construction Management, Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Architectural Technology, Building Engineering or Facilities Management.

Ideally, you should be employed either part or full-time in a construction-related job, i.e trainee manager, surveyor, engineer in a technician, senior technician or management position. As a self-employed applicant you must be able to prove that you have built environment experience and are in regular construction employmentYou will be studying on a part-time basis one full day per week. On this course you will complete ten units of study delivered over the two years (five units each year) to enable progression onto our Level 5 HND in Construction and Level 6 BSc (Hons) Degree in Construction Management for Sustainability and Regeneration of the Built Environment.

On completion of this course you will be faced with three options;

use the qualification only to gain better career prospects, such as promotion,
to progress to higher education level and enrol onto our HND in construction, which in turn can lead to our Level 6 BSc (Hons) Degree in Construction Management for Sustainability and Regeneration of the Built Environment. or alternatively,
to progress onto university on a part or full-time BSc (Hons) Or BA(Hons) degree course.

GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 (C) or above or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.

Course programme

You will extend your knowledge in the following 'Specialist' units:

Unit 3 - Applied Mathematics;
Unit 4 - Management Principles and Application;
Unit 7 - Construction and Maintenance of Buildings;
Unit 9 - Law and Contract;
Unit 13 - Environmental Impact of Construction;
Unit 29 - Computer-aided Design.

All units are assessed on a continuous assessment basis by means of written and some practical assignments to meet set standard criteria. A couple of units are partially assessed by individual examination. Final grades for each individual unit are awarded at either Pass, Merit or Distinction. On completion of the minimum eight units (including four core units) your HNC will be graded also as either Pass, Merit or Distinction.

An external verifier from Edexcel visits the college annually where a sample of your work is verified for accuracy of marking and quality of work.

Compulsory elements are:

Unit 1 - Design Principles and Application;
Unit 2 - Science and Materials;
Unit 5 - Group Project;
Unit 6 - Health, Safety and Welfare.
