The City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills provides you with an excellent initiation into the world of construction in order to enable you to decide whether this is a sector within which you feel you wish to work in the future.
There is an emphasis on you gaining practical skills. The qualification also promotes the development of wider employment skills, emphasising the importance of appropriate conduct and dress within a work area, customer service, customer care and safe working practices.

About this course
The aims of the qualification are: • To encourage the development of generic employability skills; • To promote the gaining of work-related skills within construction; • To prepare you for further training within construction.
You can progress into employment or further training in specific trade areas such as Level 2 Trowel Occupations (Bricklaying), Carpentry, Painting & Decorating or BTEC construction courses.
No recommended prior learning or experience is required. This qualification is aimed at people aged 14+ and adults who have an interest in following a career within the construction industry and want to explore whether this career pathway would be appropriate for them.

Course programme
These qualifications provide the ideal introduction to the construction industry and cover essential skills in the following construction trades: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, construction operations, wall and floor tiling, electrical and plumbing.
Course Assessment Method
All units are internally assessed after you have built up a portfolio of evidence that covers the relevant assessment criteria, internally assessed and verified by the centre and then externally verified by City & Guilds.
The phases cover the following trade areas:
- Phase 1: Generic Units, Bricklaying, Joinery;
- Phase 2: Wall & Floor Tiling, Construction, Operations, Painting & Decorating;
- Phase 3: Carpentry;
- Phase 4: Plastering, Plumbing, Electrical;
Additional:
Numeracy and literacy are also a part of the course; you will study Application of Number and Communication at Level 1. If you have already achieved this level through previous GCSE grades you will be exempt on production of your certificates.
