This course focuses on a key developments in modern British theatre, exploring the work of significant playwrights and theatre companies in context.

British theatre has seen exciting developments over the last twenty years. In this course we'll explore and discuss in detail the key plays and work of significant protagonists of the contemporary era and the theatre companies that have played an important part in bringing their work to the stage. We will also consider the cultural, political and social landscape that has surrounded it, and how devised and cross-form theatre companies have influenced contemporary theatre,.

About this course

Gain a clearer understanding and developed knowledge of British theatre in the contemporary period
-Understand the cultural and political context that the plays were written in
-Extend your knowledge of key British contemporary playwrights and theatre companies
-Develop your analytical skills in relation to plays from the period
-Understand the significance of developments in British Theatre.

Bring pen and paper. You may wish to obtain the key texts but extracts will be provided by the tutor on the day.

Topics will be explored through tutor led practical analysis of plays and discussion.

Course programme

We will explore British contemporary playwriting in the cultural and political context and the landscape of British theatre and new writing. We will look at and discuss key plays in detail throughout the course with reference to other significant texts, focusing particularly on form, style and themes. We will also consider the cultural heritage of the plays and protagonists.

Plays and works referred to and explored will include:
A Number by Caryl Churchill
Blue/Orange by Joe Penhall
Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth
Talking Love and Silence by Debbie Tucker Green
Tank by Breach Theatre

There will be a main focus on ‘A Number' and 'Tank'.
