About this course
Our experience of delivering CPD to pharmacy technicians demonstrates that career progression is facilitated by completion of our university courses.
This course could be ideal for anyone wanting to expand their role, gain the tools for promotion and enhance their career.
There is no qualification awarded for this course but those who successfully complete the course will receive a letter confirming their completion.
You must be a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and be able to use the internet, email and have basic competence in 'Office' programmes such as Word and PowerPoint. You must also have access to the internet.
If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.

Core modules
Professional Development
This module offers the study skills and professional skills necessary for new and extended roles in pharmacy. It gives you the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills in relation to the use of electronic resources for medicines information and problem solving, and introduces reflective practice, the management of change and report writing. You'll undertake a mini audit project in the workplace, which is presented at a ‘showcase conference’ to give you the chance to demonstrate your presentation and project management skills.
Medicines Management
This module gives you the opportunity to expand your knowledge about how medicines work, adverse drug reactions, the managed introduction of new drugs, medication history taking, medicines reconciliation and medicines optimisation. The teaching includes the management of interface issues, communication about medicines, brand changes, pharmaceutical care planning, effective counselling, the use of guidance and targets and public health. An introduction to individualised therapeutics is also provided.

Medication Safety
This module is for those with no dispensing role and includes the safe supply and handling of medicines, error reduction strategies, improving safety and identifying risk.
Accredited Accuracy Checking for Pharmacy
The module is for those in a dispensing role and who have the support of their employer to complete their assessment. It includes the safe supply and handling of medicines, error reduction strategies, improving safety and identifying risk. It also includes a checking portfolio, where technicians keep a record of medicines they have checked. It also includes a workplace assessment.
