This highly interactive short course aims to help clinicians work more effectively with people who have hearing loss and their families.
Through developing good counselling skills, you'll improve the quality of your day-to-day interactions with patients/clients and families.
You'll learn about and practise key counselling skills such as:
active listening
reflection
effective use of questioning and challenging
You'll also receive some basic training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
You'll have the opportunity to discuss tricky situations.

About this course
The course is suitable for clinicians at all levels who work with people who have hearing loss, including:
audiologists
hearing therapists
hearing aid dispensers
ENT nurses and doctors
Teaching is through short lectures, whole class discussion, video clips and role play.
You'll be expected to discuss your own clinical experience in class.
You'll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend at least 8 of the 10 classes.

Course programme
Classes will be held on Monday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm.
Each week the course focuses on a different topic. Topics will include:
- Different approaches to counselling
- Verbal and non-verbal listening skills
- Questioning and challenging techniques
- The basic principles of cognitive behavioural therapy
- Working with people in distress
- How to use counselling skills in audiological practice
- Working within professional boundaries
- Recognising when onward referral is needed
- Evaluating one’s own performance as a counsellor
