About this course

You will need: A to C grades in 5 GCSE's including English and Maths or have successfully completed the Creative and Media Diploma at Level 2. A desire to work within the design and media world. To do work outside lesson time to complete your coursework. The ability to study and understand an overview of how these industries work together. Work well as part of a team and independently. Highly self motivated with a clear passion to be successful. Flexible and adaptable to change and respond positively to feedback. Good time management skills to meet deadlines.

Creative and Media Diploma (Level 3)
This course is intended for students with a genuine interest in the world of art, design and media, with an aim to progress on to University and work within this industry. This course is not for the faint hearted as it involves hard work and dedication, however you will be rewarded with a great sense of achievement.

What does the course consist of?
  • Principle learning which are coursework units, both assessment and exam.
  • Additional specialist learning, this is a stand alone A level such as Media or Film Studies, Art, Music, English.
  • Extended project, this is a self directed course with an exam.
  • Functional Skills, you must pass Maths, English and ICT at level 2 and be able to demonstrate how you apply these skills in your principal learning.
  • You must successfully complete all of the above to achieve your Creative and Media Diploma.

Assessment
  • You will be set a series of practical assignments and explore different mediums, composition, camera functions, lighting, colour, surface and mark making amongst many others.
  • You will be introduced to a variety of ways to research, conducting surveys from the general public, questionnaires to help evaluate the effectiveness of your practical work.
  • You will work on live briefs with real clients in industry.
  • You will have to complete a work placement.
  • You will build up a visual practical portfolio for assessment at the end of the course.
  • Most of your work will be done on study sheets and in diary workbooks.

What else do I need to know?
  • There will be a studio charge for materials such as workbooks.
  • You are encouraged to purchase basic materials, ideally a digital camera, 1GB memory stick and photographic paper.
  • Visits to local and national galleries are essential for first hand experience.

This course is run collaboratively in Southampton together with Itchen College and City College. You will have opportunities to meet your counterparts from these Colleges during your time on the course. This course is equivalent to 4 and a half A levels and you are rewarded UCAS points to progress on to Universities throughout the UK.
