Develop your skills in music technology in an experimental and creative environment.
Flexible and innovative teaching methods, including Distance Learning options.
Designed for musicians, artists and creative technologists from a wide variety of backgrounds.
No genre boundaries – we cover electroacoustic, acousmatic and computer music, electronica and dance music, sound art, audiovisual performance and more.
This course is designed for individuals with experience of music technology and related disciplines. You’ll explore the field in more depth, and/or broaden your experience in interdisciplinary and multimedia work.
Our staff and students have released numerous records (many as part of the Bristol underground bass scene), and have specialisms in audiovisual work, sound design, music for media, game audio, programming and lecturing (FE and HE).
We have outstanding facilities in this area, including two fully-fledged TV studios and post-production audio suites. You’ll also have access to our world-leading Seeing Sound Visual Music symposium.

About this course
The course is designed to be flexible and to work around your individual interests and needs. You may choose to focus purely on sound throughout the course or you can add in multimedia elements.
You’ll have a great deal of freedom to focus on the work you want to do. Even when you’re studying theory, you can focus on your own individual area of research, so you can research and contextualise your own area of practice. Some modules are optional, and in addition there is a great deal of flexibility within the modules. For example, the Skills Portfolio module is made up of many sub-projects from which you choose a selection.
Our graduate’s careers include:
Composer
Producer
Sound designer
Composer for TV/film
Game audio
Software developer
Creative coder
Instrument designer and engineer
Some graduates go onto further study and research at PhD level, and some go on to become lecturers in further and higher education.
We offer places on the basis of our assessment of the student's quality, potential and commitment, and their ability to benefit from the course. Normally, but not invariably, a student will have a first degree. Applications are invited from candidates with a range of academic disciplines and from a variety of national backgrounds. Applicants should submit a portfolio with their application, comprising no more than three pieces of representative work. The form of this portfolio will depend on the music you make: we are happy to receive CDs, DVDs, scores, documentation of performances or install

Course programme
· Trimester 1
You’ll gain a grounding in creative sound and media technology. Following a structured teaching-led programme, we’ll furnish you with the practical and theoretical skills you’ll need to develop as the course progresses.
· Trimester 2
In the second trimester you’ll create a themed but creatively free portfolio. We’ll encourage you to collaborate with students on the Creative Sound and Media Technology course, with students taking our other MMus courses, or indeed with creative individuals outside of the course.
You’ll have the choice to attend a weekly seminar series in either electroacoustic composition techniques, or visual music.
· Trimester 3
You’ll complete a major project, during a dissertation-equivalent module. You can undertake your own programme of work (in any area you like) with close staff supervision. You’ll use the skills acquired in the first two trimesters to produce a substantial portfolio of practical creative work.
You’ll work independently, focusing on your individual practice. You’ll receive one-to-one tutorial support at the beginning and end of the module and on request.
Course assessment
Assessments are primarily practice-based, in the form of portfolio submissions of creative work. These are usually accompanied by a short written document – this is intended to help assess the process as well as the end result and these are not formal essays. The only substantial essay required is for the Context and Methodology module.
