LLM Critical Legal Practice

Part-Time Programme

This course, which will be taught in the evening, will appeal to prospective applicants who are engaged in (or wish to be engaged in) the provision of legal advice and/or assistance within the areas of immigration and refugee law, human rights, housing, poverty or other aspects of social welfare law. The LLM Critical Legal Practice is not equivalent to the BVC or LPC and does not exempt students from the vocational stage of qualification toward the profession of Barrister or Solicitor. However, if you are unsure as to whether you wish to qualify as a Barrister or Solicitor, or you work in an NGO or as a caseworker or community worker and wish to improve your qualifications, or you are already a practising lawyer keen to combine practical work with academic study, then this may well be the course for you.

Birkbeck School of Law has a long tradition of theoretically informed critical legal research and teaching. It is a research-intensive School with a strong international reputation. In recent years it has developed clinical legal options at both undergraduate and Masters level. Birkbeck has a long and highly regarded tradition of designing and delivering postgraduate programmes to students who are balancing careers and other commitments with postgraduate study.
