Mapping the future of children in the family justice system
This conference combines insight on national policy issues with updates on both public and private law developments including:
- The review of the family justice system
- Cafcass resources, funding and the future
- The role of the child as a witness in court
- Developments in adoption, residence and contact
- Recent public and private law cases of importance, including Re W
“We know that for many families the current family justice system is proving far too complicated, and its adversarial nature can lead to bitter, lengthy court hearings, prolonging what is already a stressful and emotionally draining experience” Jack Straw (January 2010)
Family Law is pleased to announce the 15th Children Law and Practice Conference, the leading annual event exploring key issues for practitioners and advocates representing children in the legal system. The 2010 programme will again be delivered by speakers with unparalleled knowledge, and has been expanded to include not only the latest information on private law and public law, but policy developments.
The last 12 months has been a hugely busy period for the courts, with Cafcass' figures showing that up to September 2009, referrals for public and private law children cases compared with the previous year are averaging 40% and 50% higher England-wide respectively. This has culminated in unique resourcing challenges and backlogs in the system, leading the government to announce a fundamental review of the family justice system in January 2010.
As well as providing insight into proposals by the government to tackle these problems and better support both children and parents and review other recent developments, commentary will be provided on the most important public and private law cases, including Re W. The speakers will examine current court attitudes, what methods can be used to avoid confrontational court hearings, and recent developments in adoption and international issues. Commentary will also be provided on how organisations are representing the interests of children in response to the ongoing challenges of underfunding and tight resources.
This is a must-attend event for everyone working in this important area, whether working for or advising local authorities, acting for parents, children or other family members. Don’t delay, book your place today
