This course for those studying or practicing in the creative arts is about where we have come from and where we are going culturally and creatively; about how modernity changed art and culture forever and how ideas associated with Modernism have evolved over the 20th and 21st centuries. This course involves critical thinking, playing with theoretical ideas and concepts, sharing your personal practice, ideas and experiences, and building theoretical knowledge and confidence in reading and using critical theory to develop creative work and ideas.

About this course

• Read, interpret and apply ideas from a range of theoretical texts from cultural theory, art and design history, sociology, philosophy and artist writings• Identify how theories associated with Modernism, Postmodernism and more recent theoretical developments have impacted on culture and creative work in the arts• Explore and discuss contemporary theory with greater confidence to inspire and inform your own creative work• Critically and creatively reflect on and contextualise your own creative practice in historical and contemporary culture.

You should bring a note book and pen to record information, and you may wish to buy books featured on course reading lists.

You will be taught via a mixture of illustrated talks, set readings (which will provided for you digitally) and group discussion, analysis tasks, interactive activities, and through reading and discussing a range of interesting historical and contemporary examples. At times you will be invited to present your own creative work and thinking where appropriate. You will be set theoretical readings that will be provided by your tutors, so will need to be able to spend a little time between classes reading these to prepare for each class.

Course programme

Through illustrated talks, critical readings, group discussion and crits, and the sharing and exploring of creative work, this course will explore key themes from recent cultural history as well as current theories and ideas reflecting and informing contemporary culture. Ideal for those engaged in creative study across the arts, the course will familiarise you with key ideas from cultural history - including Modern, Post-Structural and Postmodern theories - as well as more recent cultural developments and thinking from the past 20 years such as the post-digital, the alter-modern and the meta-modern! Through discussing and critiquing exciting contemporary theories and work, this course will help you situate yourself within cultural history and 21st century culture, and inspire and stimulate creative reflection and work. The course concludes with an opportunity to share your creative thinking and work developed in response to course themes.
