The course will explore - critically and conceptually - 2D and 3D space; actual, digital and virtual space; the plinth and the picture frame; private and public space; institutions and galleries; domestic, urban, suburban, rural and wild spaces; and site-specificy. The course encourages students to think critically about their, and their works’, place within the world and how different spaces effect the meaning and significance of various practices.

The course will draw ideas from a range of subject areas including cultural geography, spatial philosophy, art history, sociology, and museum theory. Case studies and examples include looking at particular galleries and institutions; historical and contemporary landscape artists; site-specific practices such as land art, installation, performance, and public sculpture; and online and digital art practices in ‘virtual space’.

This course explores contemporary practices and debates and as such you can expect to be stimulated and challenged by some of the ideas and images discussed.
