Dance science is the scientific study of dance and dancers, as well as the practical application of scientific principles to dance. Its aims are the enhancement of performance, the reduction of injury, and the improvement of well-being and health.

About this course

Identify the physical and physiological demands of dance genres
Learn how to improve your anaerobic power
Discover how to apply strength training into your dance preparation
Recognise how to stretch safely
Explore causes of injury in dance, and how to warm up and cool-down according to your dance genre
Recognise how to develop your core strength.

Notebooks, comfortable clothes preferably gym clothes, trainers and water.

This will be a practical and theory class. Students should be prepared to move around the space. Students will work
both aerobically and anaerobically, a warm up and cool-down will be provided according to the activity. It is advisable that all students should be injury free and be able to increase their heart rate to high intensities. Theory classes will involve ILT, and there may be small activities to complete at home.

Aerobic/ Anaerobic power - Learn about these energy systems and how to train them to improve your dance.
Muscle strength and power in dance - Learn how to apply these concepts into dance training to create more explosive choreography and technique.
Flexibility in dance - Investigate the different types of stretching and how it might benefit your dance performance.
Injury prevention - Research screening techniques used to identify potential causes of injury and techniques recommended through Dance Science.
Core strength - Understand the importance of the core musculature in dance and practice techniques employed to improve strength.
