If you are a dental graduate who wants to pursue a career in oral medicine this programme is for you. The Professional Doctorate Programme in Oral Medicine provides an integrated three years training for dentists who aspire to be clinical academics of the future. The DClinDent Degree integrates academic activities with clinical practice and research up to level 8 of FHEQ and the contents of the modules will reflect the General Dental Council (UK) Specialist Curriculum. The degree is full-time and will provide a sound basis for developing an academic career and for preparing for a career as a specialist in oral medicine. The three-year full-time DClinDent Degree programme has a strong emphasis on close chair-side support.
This programme will:
Extend your knowledge and skills in Oral Medicine at a postgraduate level and prepare you for a professional career as a dentist with a specialist interest in the discipline
Provide you with hands-on clinical training through chair-side supervised teaching in which treatment planning and clinical procedures are performed for selected cases, including a number of complex treatments
Provide research training to professional doctorate level allowing you to develop critical appraisal skills in relation to published literature and undertake a research project, under direct supervision

Structure
DClinDent in Oral Medicine is currently available to study full-time for three years.
The aim of the DClinDent programme is to extend knowledge and skills in Oral Medicine beyond the level obtained as an undergraduate and to prepare the candidate for an academic career or a professional career as a specialist in that discipline.
The components of the programme are designed to accomplish this aim:
- A programme of seminars, lectures and tutorials commencing with an introductory course to the fundamentals of Oral Medicine and its related disciplines and a review of the evidence base of the clinical and scientific scope of the subject
- Supervised clinical practice in which treatment planning and clinical procedures are performed for selected cases, including a number of complex treatments
- A research project leading to a dissertation in which the candidate is required to demonstrate the application of scientific method to a problem of relevance to the subject area
The three years of full-time study will provide 540 credits of which 270 credits are directed study element and 270 credits are research element.

Undertaking a professional doctorate programme is a serious commitment, with weekly contact hours being in addition to numerous hours of independent learning and research needed to progress at the required level. When coursework or examination deadlines are approaching independent learning hours may need to increase significantly.
