About this course

The course is developed through seminars, lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research.

You will be introduced to research skills and methods, product development, design management and methods, with marketing and business skills. The emphasis of the course is learning how best to present ideas, and where and how to place them in the market.
Students develop and propose a personal route of study and explore and research an area of textiles in knit, print, weave, or embroidery for fashion or interiors, textile art, or in fashion design.

The main aim of the course is for students to identify and develop their own employment opportunities. Possible directions may include textile design, product or fashion design, retail or sales and marketing opportunities, trend prediction and promotion, teaching or further research in industry or education, and/or exhibiting in galleries as a textile artist.

Alumni work in a variety of sectors and levels of different industries typically:
• Studio Designer
• Free-lance Designer
• Industrial Designer
• Designer-Maker (Small Business Practice)
• Practicing Textile Artist
• Public / Private Arts Design and/or Management
• Retail and Display Management
• Styling
• Academic careers in a further or higher education institutions
• Museums and Collections
• Numerous ‘Portfolio’ Careers

Admission is normally based on a good undergraduate degree in a design or media discipline together with an interview. Applicants with a good honours degree in a related discipline and/or with relevant work experience will also be considered. To help applicants – especially those from overseas – to decide if this course is appropriate for them, it is advisable to contact the Course Director prior to application.

What I would highlight: The course helps facilitate a wide range of interests and skillsets. The facilities include equipment and resources for print, knit, weave, embroidery, photography and mixed media. The knowledge of the tutors and technicians is invaluable. The course has enabled me to develop embroidery skills to a professional level.

Course programme

· Trimester 1
The emphasis in trimester 1 is on the development of ideas: Delivered through a taught programme of lectures, seminars, group critiques, and assignments Research Methodologies introduces generic methodologies and considers subject specific data retrieval analysis and evaluation techniques. Through The Development of Product, Market Research and Product Ideas you will negotiate a programme of study developing ideas technically and aesthetically, and applying in-depth investigation into techniques and researching the chosen market.

· Trimester 2
During the second trimester you’ll take two modules: Marketing Skills comprises of lectures, seminars and research and is about developing relevant professional skills and understanding of marketing requirements for textile designers, makers and artists; Negotiated by each student, Product Sampling and Development and Research involves initial product sampling techniques and investigation, range planning and the development and progression of ideas to product level.

· Trimester 3
The final trimester involves a further negotiated major study. This practice-based Master’s Project is about bringing ideas to a professional conclusion often in the form of an exhibition of finished work and supporting promotional materials.

Part time students follow the same sequence of modules, but do so over seven trimesters (or 28 months).

Course assessment

The PG Cert is assessed by studio exhibition and/or portfolio presentation with a marketing assignment. The PG Dip involves a written report including market analysis of your chosen product field. Practical work is presented by studio work and/or portfolio and an evaluative report. For the MA you will present a cohesive body of creative work, supported by an extended report.

Course length: MA full-time: three trimesters (one calendar year); MA part-time: six trimesters (two calendar years); PG Dip full-time: two trimesters (one academic year); PG Dip part-time: four trimesters; PG Cert full-time: one trimester; PG Cert part-time: two trimesters.
