What makes a logo work and what doesn’t? This course will look at the purpose of a logo exploring the fundamental properties of a successful logo design. It will cover concepts such as corporate identity with reference to real-life case studies. Students will gain an overview of the logo design process in a professional environment. They will explore the various techniques designers use to create identity: spacing, colour, shape, and letterform. They will learn ways to add impact and personality to their logo designs, addressing key issues such as legibility, simplicity and typography. Students will have the possibility to tackle a professional logo design project. The project will offer a range of challenges allowing students to build their personal style within the constraints of a realistic brief.

About this course

- Research and sketch simple logos exploring differences in concept development
- Understand the different components of a corporate identity
- Design a simple logo in Adobe Illustrator and apply the finished design to letterhead, business cards
to develop a cohesive corporate identity.

Please bring an A4 plain paper sketchpad, a pencil and a memory stick to store your work and develop ideas.

Course programme

- The creative process for logo design
- Types of logos including:
- Logotypes
- Initials
- Abstract symbols
- Pictorial symbols
- Corporate identity design: letterhead, business cards, compliment slips
- Integration of logo and corporate identity design with Adobe Illustrator software capabilities.

Teaching methods will include visual presentations, group discussion, computer demonstrations and practical work. Basic training in Adobe Illustrator will be included in the course. You are encouraged to complete assignments outside the class.
