Course programme

We will experience how design can be relevant, stimulating and useful, and how it can mean far more than simply 'designer' objects.

Throughout the workshops you will use methods to open up creativity in order to generate ideas ranging from the conservative to the far-out.

Topics covered

  • The course will focus on 3D design for manufacture, but the processes learnt will be applicable to other disciplines within the broader design field.
  • You will learn methods to control and manage ideas and produce design concepts in paper, card sketch-models and 2D presentations suitable to show to a potential client.
  • You will develop your work using a process that incorporates essential design principles including emotional durability, visual language, and ergonomics, as well as design for manufacture.
  • We will have the chance to debate and discuss issues such as sustainability and inclusive design.
  • The course is enriched throughout by regular presentations and skills tutorials by visiting professionals. In previous years they included Dominic Wilcox, Matteo Fogale, Dan Ziglam from deadgood, Jeremy Innes-Hopkins from IDEO, Lisa Johansson from INTO, Roger Arquer and Kirsty White amongst others, as well as presentations by graduates of the university.
  • There will be a project set by a real design brand culminating with student presentations of relevant and considered solutions to a client , which will provide realistic feedback and insights.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older
